Spring is Here, Ponds are open and bait is showing…

Spring has sprung and fish must be close.  Capt Cam and Jer both smelled herring in the air last night.  It was confirmed by looking at the entrance to long pond today.  This all makes sense because Sesachaca Pond was opened today. Hummock is due to open in the next couple of days. Also- Capt Cam was walking out to the Jetties at low tide this week and found some sand eels.  The water is starting to come to life… What does this mean?

In the next few days, expect holdover stripers that have been in the ponds to activate.  These fish can be targeted with Flies and sparse, small Jigs.  We should expect to see some fresh bass come into the mix as well.  This fish will be small and covered in sea lice.  Use small jigs or metals to catch these fish.  You may catch a holdover in the ocean with the ponds open, so don’t let that confuse you…  Either way- you’re fishing and hopefully catching fish!

With fish in mind, we are excited to be part of a new Island tournament being run by Rafael Osona- which will benefit many Island charities.   Please see his letter below:

Please join us in the first annual Spring Sea Run Opener charitable striped bass tournament held on Nantucket Island beginning April 20th!

It has been a long cold winter but with the promise of spring and stripers on the way it is once again time to dust off the rods, oil the reels, sharpen our hooks, and catch some fish! This tournament is all about getting back outside and enjoying the best of what Nantucket has to offer while raising money for an island charity.  With the help and sponsorship of Bill Fisher Tackle, Nantucket Surfcasting Co. and Custom Rods, Salt Cod Lures, The UPS Store Nantucket, Force 5 Water Sports and Sign Here Nantucket we are excited to invite you to join us in our inaugural charitable tournament.

Prizes will be awarded for the first landed sea run striped bass of the season, first keeper of the season (28″ in length or greater), and shortest bass in length.  Participants will also be fishing to representing an island non-profit of their choice.  A winner will be selected at random from all participants who register a catch during the duration of the tournament.
