Hurry up and Wait!

Daffodil’s are in full bloom, ponds have been opened, we have sand eels splashing around and the kick-off of the Spring Run Opener is today but we have not heard of any bass being caught, which is too bad, because after this winter- we are ready for it!  While our saltwater rods have not been bent, our fresh water rods have had some steady action. The pond fishing is just heating up.  Hummock and Maxey’s seem to have the most activity right now.

Friends who have been fishing in CT have caught schoolies, which means our fish are not far behind.  Hopefully we’ll see some fresh fish in the next week-10 days. Be ready with new line and clean reel.   Use small metals and jigs and you’ll be productive. If you have not cleaned your gear yet, stop by the shop and we’ll help you out.  Your reels should be serviced annually and you’ll probably need some new hooks after a long winter. The shop is open Thursday’s through Sunday’s and we are about 80% full with some great new inventory!   Jeremyand Dave are willing and ready to help and answer any questions you may have.

Water temps are still low (45 degrees in the sound and 44 degrees near the beaches) there is bait and with bait usually come the first run of fish.  No doubt they will be showing soon.  We’ve seen sand eels and herring which naturally mean Mackeral and Bass will follow.  This year, patience will be a virtue.  We are sure most of you heard, but for those of you who didn’t, the regulations for Striped Bass changed this year with Massachusetts limiting the recreational limit to one fish per day over 28 inches.  This is a key move in that the state has recognized the need to protect the valuable species. We are also very pleased that the petition sent around this Fall to push Squid boats back outside of three miles was successful.  We hope that this will help to protect our squid fishery, which will help to bring more Bass back to our waters.

As usual, BFT would like to offer a $50 gift certificate to the angler who catches the first sea run Bass. Please take a pic and stop by the shop to let us know…  Hopefully you are entered into the Spring Run Opener tournament and win some great prizes as well!  If your not already registered click here.  Good luck!

It’s all about to start- have fun!

Tight lines,
