Nantucket Fly Fishing Striped Bass Guide Report Charters

Dear Fishermen and Friends,

Happy August! And with Happy August we are happy to report a few more Bonito Catches in the last few days. It will surprise some that the three bonito caught this week were all caught at Great Point. Capt. Corey caught one on Tuesday Morning (east tide) and Paul Salem caught one in the afternoon (west tide.) There was one other caught on Wednesday at Great Point on the East Tide. While this may seem surprising to some, there are often bonito caught at the Point, especially before the bar heats up.

The good news is while the bar has yet to produce many fish (1 rumored), the bait is there. The bait is not thick yet, but the little sand eels have made their way in. This is apparent not only to those fishing outside of the opening, but anyone who is in either madaket or town harbor will seen the tiny sand eels as well as tinker blues chasing them around. It is Great Fun when the water comes to life with juvenile fish. This is happening all over: Capt Josh who runs the Critter Cruises was catching a bunch of 3 day old Sand Sharks on Wednesday. Long and short is that there is a lot of young life around the island and with young life, come “other fish” looking for a meal. As sad as it may be, It is the natural cycle.

As for Bass, There have been a few caught under Sankaty light, a couple at great point and some are still showing themselves around Tuckernuck in the shallows. Capt Hal Herrick even had success catching Bass during mid-day. We’d love to know his trick, but this shows that are around, even during the hot days of August. They are not thick, but they are around. The other Spot to find bass this time of year is in the harbor, but the best success comes at night. If you can drive around to coatue and fish the inner points or drift in a shallow boat in the evening hours you have the chance at some line-sided fun.

While we all love exotics and we are at the beginning of what we hope to be a good bonito run in August, this is still the time of year to be thankful for bluefish. The South Shore is littered with them for boat and beach fishermen. The fish have been thick from Miacomet down to Madequecham. The North Side of the island has stayed slow, except for Great Point, which is the most consistent spot to catch blues from the beach(and arguably) the most beautiful. Hopkins and ballistics have yielded the most fish with deadly Dicks as a close third.

Enjoy the weather… Even on days like tomorrow when we are expecting Rain, go out and wet a line. These can be your most productive days on the water!

Tight lines,

Capt. Cam Gammill
Capt. Corey Gammill
Capt. Nat Reeder
Dr. Mike Ruby
