Nantucket Fly Fishing Striped Bass Guide Report Charters

Well, it happened. Fishing Turned On! And we could not be more fired up. Just when many of us were getting negative, the squid piled into the rips, the butterfish came in, the sand eels came in and our fishery became the wild chaos that we love and cherish. Can you hear the sigh of relief in this note!

For starters, let’s talk Bass. Beach fishermen this week reported catching bass all along the South Shore from Madaket to Low Beach. It was not every cast fishing, but work hard and be rewarded fishing. These fish are feeding hard along the bach, so don’t feel like you need to cast far out. There are still fish in the harbor and madaket as well, with eel point continuing to be the hot spot in Madaket and Second and third point producing at night time in the harbor. These harbor fish are smaller, but great fun.

From the boats, the rips are not on fire, but comparatively they are much improved. One of our favorite pieces is that in the same trip the BFO guides are catching 18 inch bass and 42 inch bass. The East Tide has out fished the West Tide as of late, but Capt. Corey and Don Gaitor landed a 47 inch Bass on the West Tide on Wednesday. The Bass have also filled into Great Point as well, with anglers on Thursday catching 1-3 fish a tide if working hard. What is helping at great point is that the blues are not yet thick, so the bass have a chance to win the battle to the lure. There is no doubt in the week to come that great Point will load up with 3-5 lb bluefish, making catching a bass much tougher, so go take advantage while you can. The bass have been caught on bombers, but the most fun has been to catch them on Super Strike’s, which is a great new lure that we are having trouble keeping in stock.

The Best bluefishing, or most consistent bluefishing, has been the South Shore with fish from Miacomet to Surfside. There have also been piles of blues over off Muskeget as well. Old Man and Pochick still have fish as does Sankaty. Sankaty continues to be great for Bass as well.

Offshore, many continue to catch multiple tuna. While the fish are on the smaller size, 40-45 inches, they have been incredibly fun and powerful. It is a great treat to get out there and see whales and dolphins while having a realistic shot at catching a tuna!
